Finding God in R&B: Gerald and Eddie Levert “Baby Hold Onto Me”

In 1991, Cleveland R&B sensation Gerald Levert released his debut solo album entitled Private Line. It held the number one ranking on the Billboard Magazine list of R&B albums for two weeks in a row in April of 1992. My favorite song off of that album was “Baby Hold Onto Me”, which he sung with his legendary father Eddie Levert.

1991 – 1992 was my first year at university, so my primary venue of listening to new music was at parties on the weekend, and this was one of the songs that was always played during the late hours so that couples could slow dance together. I didn’t have a lot of money when I first got to college, and didn’t even have a car as a freshman – my looks, humor, and a TV with a VCR were all I had to impress girls with. So I always appreciated the first line of the song talking about, “All your friends are telling you; You should have a fancy car and diamond rings; But Girl you know all good things come in time.”

What I’ve always said about my series on ‘Finding God in Music’ is that it’s impossible to write a love song without touching upon the divine, because God IS Love (Cf. 1 John 4:8); and here is, yet, another example of that principle. Throughout this song we can definitely see God as the voice of the protagonist. He is the one telling ‘the girl’ that He’d do anything to see a smile upon her face; to not doubt His love – because it is true; to not let her friend sway her away from Him; that He is a special kind – that is hard to find; that He was there when someone made her cry; He was there to comfort her. Indeed, this is not only language of the sacred Scriptures, but is also the language of our evolving relationship with God.

As you listen to Gerald and Eddie sing these words of unconditional love, think of the voice of God singing these very same desires to you.

“Baby Hold Onto Me”
Songwriters: LEVERT, GERALD EDWARD / NICHOLAS, EDWIN LAMAR

All your friends are telling you
You should have a fancy car and diamond rings
But Girl you know all good things come in time

Girl you know I’ll do just about anything
To see a smile upon your face
So don’t let your friends go messing with
Your mind

Girl you know there ain’t nothing
I won’t do for you and Baby don’t
Don’t ever doubt my love ’cause it’s true

    Baby hold on to me
    See I’m a special kind
A man that is hard to find
    Told you a thousand times
    Baby hold on to me

    Repeat 1

Oh Girl wasn’t I there when he made you cry
And who was there to comfort you
When he said bye bye bye bye bye Baby

Girl I give you my time here is my money
All of my heart and you’ll be so sorry Baby
If we were to ever part
And Girl you know
That I would never hurt you
And Girl you know
That I would never desert you

    Better hold on to me
    See I’m a special knid
A man that is hard to find
    Told you a thousand times
    Baby hold on to me

    Repeat 1

I wanna be everthing that you need
And I promise yes I promise Baby
To be there for you baby

    Repeat 1
