Finding God in R&B: Musiq Soulchild “Love”

Musiq LoveOne of my all-time favorite R&B albums is Aijuswanaseing by Musiq Soulchild, who also happens to be one of my favorite artists as well. For the longest time I never got past tracks two through four (‘Girl Next Door’ – featuring Ayana, ‘You And Me’, and ‘Just Friends’); I would just keep playing those over and over and over again, but one day I finally let the CD keep playing and I heard this song called ‘Love‘.

I was still an agnostic (borderline deist – full-time anti-Christian) back then, but from the moment I tuned my ears into the lyrics of this song, I thought it might have originally been a gospel song that had exchanged the word ‘Lord’ with the word ‘Love’, and from thereon I would always exchange the word ‘Love’ for ‘Lord’ in my head whenever I listed to it. Looking back I find it remarkable how God used this song to plant the seed of His Divine Presence in my sinful heart.

I encourage you also to think of the Lord every time you hear the word ‘Love’ in this song, and if it resonates with your own journey to Mt. Calvary then go ahead and sing these beautiful lyrics to the Author of all things truly Good and Holy; for God is Love.

“Beloved, let us love one another, because love is of God; everyone who loves is begotten by God and knows God. Whoever is without love does not know God, for God is love. In this way the love of God was revealed to us: God sent his only Son into the world so that we might have life through him. In this is love: not that we have loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as expiation for our sins. Beloved, if God so loved us, we also must love one another.” – 1 John 4:7-11

LYRICS:

        Love
So many things I’ve got to tell you
        But I’m afraid I don’t know how
        Cause there’s a possibility
        You’ll look at me differently
        Love
Ever since the first moment I spoke your name
From then on I knew that by you being in my life
Things were destined to change cause

        Love
So many people use your name in vain
        Love
Those have faith in you sometimes go astray
        Love
Through all the ups and downs the joy and hurt
        Love
For better or worse I still will choose you first

Many days I’ve longed for you
        Wanting you
Hoping for the chance to get to know you
        Longing for your kiss
For your touch, your feel, your essence
Many nights I’ve cried from the things you do
Felt like I could die from the thought of losing you
        I know that you’re real
With no doubts and no fears
        And no questions

        Love
So many people use your name in vain
        Love
Those have faith in you sometimes go astray
        Love
Through all the ups and downs the joy and hurt
        Love
For better or worse I still will choose you first

At first you didn’t mean that much to me
But now I know that you’re all I need
The world looks so brand new to me
        Now that I found love
        Everyday I live for you
        And everything that I do
        I do it for you
What I say is how I feel so believe it’s true
You got to know I’m true

        Love
So many people use your name in vain
        Love
Those have faith in you sometimes go astray
        Love
Through all the ups and downs the joy and hurt
        Love
For better or worse I still will choose you first

        Love
So many people use your name in vain
        Love
Those have faith in you sometimes go astray
        Love
Through all the ups and downs the joy and hurt
        Love
For better or worse I still will choose you first
